There are a few crash-tested harnesses available on the market for larger dogs, such as the SleepPod Clickit Terrain and the Sleepypod Clickit Sport, the EzyDog Drive Harness and the Original All-Safe harness. These harnesses have been crash-tested and certified safe for dogs up to around 90 pounds. But, what are your options if your pup weighs more than 90 pounds? Or, what if your pup does not properly fit into one of the harnesses on the market? How do you find a harness that can fit your pup and keep her (and you) safe in the event of an accident? Where most of the crash-tested harnesses leave off, the Big Dog Seat Belt Company takes over.

The Big Dog Seat Belt Company was founded by Dwayne, a former firefighter and EMT, who witnessed firsthand what happened to improperly restrained (or not restrained) dogs in an accident. More often than not, the dog created the distraction and the distraction caused the accident. And, if the dog survived the accident, the dog would run off and become lost. The result was typically not a happy ending. The Big Dog Seat Belt Company was born from a desire to save every pet parent from the pain of losing their dog in an accident.
The Big Dog Seat Belt Company specializes in fitting dogs who either exceed the maximum weight of most harnesses, or who don’t properly fit into harnesses available on the market today. Dwayne is very clear on the importance of finding a properly fitting harness for your dog: if the harness is not the right fit, it won’t protect your dog. He has seen this one too many times in his former line of work.
The Big Dog seat belt is different from most harness on the market, because each harness is custom fitted to your specific dog. Each harness is created from automotive grade seat belt material and has a sturdy looping system comprised of multiple and continuous layers of seat belt, that, when used with the existing vehicle seat belt, is designed to fit lower on your dog. This means that in the event of an accident, the force and pressure exerted on the dogs body will be localized to the lower back and hips as opposed to the neck. Ultimately, the harness is designed to prevent your dog from sliding out of the harness or having your dog's neck broken on impact. The continuous looping system ensures fewer fatigue points that could fail when put to the test.

The Big Dog Seat Belt has been independently crash-tested and has passed the US FMVSS 213 Child Restraint Crash Testing Standard for a 110 pound dog at 30 MPH.
Most harnesses on the market today have never passed this crash- test. The key to keeping your dog safe is to keep the pup confined to the seat (in order to prevent spinal injury), and the Big Dog Seat Belt met and exceeded that challenge.
